We've donated over 50,000 books to local schools and nonprofits, and made direct financial contributions to classroom libraries across the Bay Area. Every pickup is a small investment in the communities that make this place worth living in.

What items do you accept?
Books of all kinds — hardcovers, paperbacks, textbooks, children's books. We also accept CDs, DVDs, and vinyl LPs. We don't accept magazines or journals.
Do I need to be home for the pickup?
Not at all. For standard Wednesday pickups, just leave boxes on your porch by 9am labeled "Golden Hour Books." For White Glove service, leave us access instructions — no need to supervise.
Is there a minimum number of books?
No minimum. We take 1 box or 60 boxes. Our average pickup is about 6–7 boxes.
Where do my books actually go?
We route every book to its highest and best use — donation to local schools and nonprofits like COSAS and the Children's Book Project, online resale, or bulk redistribution. Our goal is 100% reuse.
What is the White Glove service?
We come to your home with all supplies, pack everything on-site (~45 books per box), and remove it all in one visit. Priced at $25 per box. Most homes are done in under an hour. Popular with estates, downsizing, and anyone who values their time.
Can I get a tax receipt for my donation?
Golden Hour Books is not a nonprofit and we're not able to provide tax receipts for donations. We partner closely with nonprofit organizations who do the work of redistribution, but we operate as an independent service. If a tax deduction is important to you, we're happy to point you toward our nonprofit partners who accept direct donations.
Do you serve areas outside Berkeley and Oakland?
Yes — our free zone covers Berkeley, Oakland, Piedmont, Emeryville, Albany, El Cerrito, Kensington, and Alameda. Pickups outside these cities carry a flat $25 extended-area fee. Type your address in the booking form and we'll detect it automatically.
